Sound Healing

Sound Healing is the oldest form of healing on the planet and has been used in every aboriginal culture. Sound, and its power, are the underpinnings of most creation stories. Even today modern physical science reinforces that underlying all of matter is vibration. Thus vibration is our common heritage and ongoing reality. The power of sound/vibration to change matter is the basis of Sound Healing. Sound Healing reached a pinnacle of sorts in ancient Egypt  and has  spread and grown throughout history. It is as much about healing the spirit, as it is about healing the body and the mind. Current scientific research, particularly in quantum physics, is exploring the direct link between sound and our states of consciousness. As Don Estes, a neuroscientist and one of my teachers at the Institute for Sound and Consciousness says "All technology leads to the realization and development of spiritual technology." It seems we are coming full circle with our ancestors whose understanding of sound was inextricabley linked with their understanding of Spirit.

My own study of Sound Healing has followed a similar trajectory, beginning with shamanic studies, using the power of the voice and drum as a way of expanding and enlightening my understanding of the unity of all creation. I've practiced meditation and chanting, both healing traditions from the ancient world and have ended up using quartz crystal bowls, a relatively new instrument, and studying the power of our voices, and all sound in fact, to affect the brain, heal the body and attain more integrated states of consciousness.

Current research in Sound Healing has advanced to show medical benefit far beyond the use of ultrasound, the decades old technique that is commonly associated with healing and sound. It is much more widely recognized as a field that provides all types of benefits complementary to standard medical practices. I would go so far as to say that with the use of sound  we’ve entered the 3rd era of modern healing. Beyond surgery (1), drug therapy and the suppression of symptoms (2) we’re squarely in the era of vibrational and holistic healing. Light and sound, the basis of our existence as understood through quantum theory, is the current frontier.

My own Sound Healing practice is evolving and eclectic. I use voice, recorded music, crystal and Tibetan bowls, drum and other rhythm instruments, spiritual counseling, tuning forks, color, and essential oils. These represent a portion of the wide range of vibrational tools that are available. I have personally experienced life changing healing and deepening as a result of these practices and I invite you to dip your toes into these same waters.
